Twilight - Why?

Okay, now I have to rant. Why is there so much positive hype about such a negative series? Twilight leaves a lot to be desired - my experience in knowledge of the book and what I've been told ( I will not be reading them, thank you), is that the story revolves around a very selfish, evil vampire who romances a teen girl, then turns her into a vampire so she doesn't die. How is this positive reading? How is this glorifying our God in any way? How is God honored in anything related to this story line?

Rather than good winning out over evil, once again, evil triumphs, and the Christian community doesn't seem to see it. Teen girls are fantasizing over "him" and the great romance that supposedly is inherent in the way he is. Why aren't we leading these girls, and ourselves for that matter, into a romance with God, the Author and Finisher of our faith?

I understand that for some this is simply entertainment, however, there is that part of me that is reminded that even the smallest of images and thoughts ultimately, somehow, turn a little bit of us away from God. My thoughts on Harry Potter are similar - how is witchcraft, something that is so strongly spoken against in the Bible - a good read, or movie? Why fill our minds with these things?

Any thoughts?

I got your link from ps. I am curious with your thoughts on twilight do you allow your kids to visit santa? I guess this year my church has decided not to do santa.

I have a very liberal view on God. And I have actually "talked" to him in the sense that i have heard his voice in a near death experience. I read harry potter etc and he was still going to let me into his kingdom and for his reasons decided not to take me.

I apologize if I have offended and this is not the kind of discussion you wanted but it is just my thoughts. Things of this nature only turn you away from God if you believe it to be real and not fantasy. Even in the bible there is more risque things then this silly story. And I have not read all the books but I have heard the hype.

Santa is something we don't do and have never done. Same with the tooth fairy and Easter bunny. My take on those is this...if I teach my children that those three characters exist, and so does Jesus, then when they discover the first three don't, why would they believe in Jesus? Why would I give them an opportunity to think that I had ever lied to them, especially about something as important as God?

I am a firm believer that people make their own choices, and that reading a certain series, etc., isn't going to make you lose your salvation - it's what you choose to do with what you've read. I'm not God, and I certainly don't claim to have any concept of His grace and mercy; I guess my concern is more about what we're allowing into our thoughts that would be directly in opposition to the Bible.

I'm not offended at all - I'm looking for other people's viewpoints so I can have a right understanding as to other people's choices, because that's what they are. I hope I don't come across as though those who read these types of books are anything "less than" I, because I have my issues with some things that God and I disagree about sometimes. It's all about our choices, and I just want to understand.

Thank you for your input and I hope this conversation sparks some more thought in us all.

I totally get what you are saying about santa, tooth fairy etc in relations to Jesus. I had never thought of it that way before. And it does make perfect sense.
